Yet Another Admission Year

It is yet another year for admitting students into tertiary institutions in the the country. One may ask what my concern about? Am I a chancellor or a registrar? But that is not it, i have been through it before so see the need voice out with this platform. My concern here is education in Ghana specifically tertiary education.

Tertiary education in Ghana now has become exceedingly expensive and a nightmare struggle. All this time our great politicians -if I can even call them such- have done enough preaching about it becoming affordable or perhaps free. But this dream is still yet to be realized thanks to their own greediness. I woke up this morning and decided to check up on the website of the various universities in the country and what I saw, was a great joy -all the universities have open admission for potential candidates into the various programs they offer. So I hurriedly started calling my paddies and family members whom I know are waiting for admissions to open so they too will have the opportunity of entering into any tertiary institution.

But so surprisingly, something stroke me to at least check the prices of the applications forms and to my astonishment; the least among them was 100GHC. I don't about you may be you might not find it so serious that it should be talked about. Guess what, I do. I do because, am thinking about those of us who cant afford it but we have everything to be there. Am talking about those of us who have to struggle to carter for themselves. Those who will do all they can to get that money and have everything right to qualify but at the end of the day they will not be giving admission all because the word "protocol". Meanwhile, will not get even a penny back.

I think is about time we have a serious talk about this issue. I dont know what those have the voices are using it for but I think is an issue we should take so serious. Recently, there was this jobs that was trending on whatsapp titled; "things which are a miracle to occur in a Ghanaian youth life" and one that was so prominent was gaining admission into a tertiary institution. You might think you have passed there or you can afford it but for me I see it as the key cause of corruption in the country. This because, after all these struggles and he/she get there. It become a time to get it all back, so if we dont talk about it now and see what can be done about it. We will be deceiving ourselves that we training leaders not knowing rather that we are training thieves for the future.

Well, I said what i think, dont know what you too think. So a comment about it will let me know your views...

THANKS!
